More tales of derring do

It was time to let Graham have a go
Daisy thought we were behaving like prats and kept a careful eye on the hands that supplement her food
Next up was Baxter - as usual anything for a cuddle and to avoid walking
Now Muttley, a newbie and non swimmer, was quite happy to paddle into the river and climb on the beached boat, whereas he was NOT happy to be lowered into it
and despite the 'I s'pose you think that's funny' look, actually really enjoyed himself
By now, of course, Daisy was doing her 'pick me, pick me' routine
and stalked off in disgust when she wasn't picked
This was why I wanted it - the pictures don't look much, but to poke around the little backwaters, where you couldn't even stick the nose of a 66ft narra, in perfectly clear water is just heavenly
This is round the backwaters at St Ives - my second, and very much longer, foray of the day
At dinner tonight, Joe said he was going to take Floyd out on it (surprisingly drink had NOT been taken), now that is the video we ALL want to see - can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. That looks very suitable for the backwaters up to Houghton Mill and around the Hemingfords, my old fishing grounds,

  3. You should be able to get right up to the weir on the lower Houghton Mill channel, which is to the right of the Houghton lock cut, next to caravan site. if you are on nobles meadow there are a couple of backwaters to the right of the next lock going upstream, not sure how deep they are.
To the left of the Houghton lock channel is a nice backwater running past Hemingford Abbots up to a couple of weir pools, mind the big Pike:-)
    Godmanchester is also nice.

  4. Andy, just returned from the Hemingford Abbots weir pool trip (minus one toe to the pike). Tried the ones you mentioned from Nobles meadow yesterday but couldn't get very far due the (becoming rapidly familiar) low chains and 'private keep out' notices. On to Godmanchester tomorrow - can't wait. Thanks for all the info - you obviously know all these backwaters, so stick with me please. Slowly heading towards Bedford

  5. Glad you enjoyed it, We used to fish around that area, having lived in St Ives and Bluntisham for a few years. Daughter still lives therer, just down the road from The Waits. We used to try to avoid the fishing bailiff on the Hemingfords/Houghton meadow, but he would sneak up the backwaters in a canoe and catch us for our £2 day ticket. There used to be a massive Pike in the weir pools, nicknamed Piranha by the locals, seen it hooked, but never brought in.

    1. Conjures up a lovely image Andy; although you have really wound up Graham with a challenge about that Pike - he has an amazing reputation for catching massive, defiant Pikes. Had a lot of fun around Godmanchester and Sat and Sunday to explore. Where do you recommend next when we move on on Monday?
